Grantmaking Strategy Advice and Program Development for Donors and Foundations

Effective, strategic and targeted philanthropy involves more than just throwing money at exciting projects and hoping for the best.  Our expert philanthropic advisors can help you to maximize the return on your ocean-related charitable investments.  We can help you to clarify your areas of focus, define your grantmaking approach for greatest impact, and evaluate or modify existing programs and initiatives to adapt to changing circumstances.

We specialize in helping donors to find their niche by framing key issues and questions, conducting research and investigations, analyzing information, and helping you to work through the important strategic, geographic and subject-area decisions that determine the impact of your grantmaking.  And, if you know WHERE but not HOW or WHO, we can provide you with detailed research about conservation investment opportunities in your specific field of interest.  In some instances, we also host and administer funds for donors through our 501(c)3 community foundation model.

Fee structure:  Consulting services can be solicited on an hourly or contractual basis.  Larger program design services range from $20,000 to $100,000.  Donor and Committee advised funds are charged a flat overhead fee. Please contact TOF President Mark J. Spalding at mspalding@oceanfdn.org to discuss your situation and receive an estimate.

Capacity Building and Program Design for Grantees and Non-Profit Organizations

Sometimes great organizations that are doing important work need a little bit of extra help, to ensure that their organization is well-equipped to accomplish its goals. The Ocean Foundation can help your organization's staff deal with the challenges of growth, strategic focus, financial sustainability, and performance evaluation. Our staff, consultants and advisors are some of the most experienced and respected marine conservation professionals in the world—we can provide top-notch legal, financial, executive, administrative, scientific and programmatic advice on virtually any issue or project related to marine conservation. We routinely work with donors and other funding agencies to provide consulting services for their grantees.

Non-profit organizations are complex entities. As such, all of the parts need to be working together smoothly for the organization to function effectively. Our staff will help to assess your organization's challenges and opportunities for improvement, create policies and language that provide you with direction, and fashion a fundraising and fiscal plan that will allow you to accomplish your goals. We are passionate about helping organizations to find their own path to success in furthering marine conservation.

Fee structure: Each project will be negotiated individually based on the specific circumstances. Hourly rates range from $65 to $200 an hour; project contracts range from $5,000 to $100,000. Please contact TOF President Mark J. Spalding at mspalding@oceanfdn.org to discuss your situation and receive an estimate.

International Meeting and Negotiation Facilitation

Whether it's a quarterly Board of Director's meeting, an all-staff retreat, a bilingual negotiation or an international workshop, some times you need a skilled, experienced outsider to come in and add some perspective and structure.  Our staff, consultants and advisors can provide a range of services from simple meeting facilitation to moderating complex international negotiations.  We strive to create a friendly, welcoming and sophisticated tone to your discussions, regardless of your objectives.  We will help you and your colleagues to explore collaborative opportunities, exchange information, develop strategies, mediate conflicts, build relationships and reach agreements, all in the name of marine conservation and protecting our ocean.

Fee structure:  Our normal facilitation fee is $1,500 a day plus expenses, though this can change based on circumstances, staff availability and the scope of your needs.  Please contact TOF President Mark J. Spalding at mspalding@oceanfdn.org to discuss your situation and receive a quote.
