Coasts & Beaches Fund
The goal of our Coasts & Beaches
Fund is to support action(s) that contribute to
sustainable and resilient coastal ecosystems
world-wide.
We love our coasts and beaches as places to live, work, and play. Forty percent of the world’s population lives on the coastal fringe, and that number is growing.
This ever-growing development is compromising the health of coastal, beach and marine ecosystems. Increasing pollution and altering natural systems affects the ability of those systems to serve as nursery areas for wildlife and as buffers to protect us from coastal storms. Clearly, there is a great need to manage our collective use of coastal areas around the world, in ways that acknowledge the role of the ecosystems on which so much depends.
Through grants made from the Coasts & Beaches Fund, we support groups working to promote best practices in managing users of the coasts and beaches. We support research on the value of the coast and beaches as natural systems that contribute to our economies and play a role in our human health. We support protection and restoration of coastal wetlands, estuaries, beaches, and mangroves.
A parallel to our grantmaking from this fund is through our sustainable resorts partnerships.
- Coastal wetlands, mangroves, and other coastal systems are highly productive, diverse habitats on which thousands of species depend
- Beaches are unique coastal environments with ecological, recreational and economic value
- Adaptive management is vital to stay abreast of natural cycles of change
