Fiscal Sponsorships

We can help reduce the complexity of operating a successful project and enable small groups and individuals to concentrate on programs and goals instead of administration.  TOF projects acquire the organizational infrastructure of a major NGO that frees individuals to conduct work in an effective and results-oriented way.  Our staff members provide financial, administrative, legal and and project counseling support so that project leaders can focus on program, planning, fundraising, and outreach.  A TOF project can be a temporary step before creating an independent organization.  The Ocean Foundation can provide:
  • Fiscal Sponsorship - the legal infrastructure of a 501(c)(3) entity, with appropriate legal incorporation, IRS exemption, and charitable registration.
  • Financial Services - oversight of all revenues and expenditures, monthly financial reports, budgetary tracking, payment of all invoices, audit and governmental reporting, all tax returns, and training in budget preparation and financial management.
  • Other Support - an array of administrative services, from liability insurance to grant and contract management, designed to serve your needs.

TOF maintains full discretion and control over all funds that it raises; our Fiscal Sponsorship Funds are not separate entities.  Fees for these services are a flat 10% of a project budget.  If you are interested in bringing your project to The Ocean Foundation as a fiscally sponsored project, please contact TOF President Mark J. Spalding for more information and to begin the process.

Our current portfolio of fiscal sponsorships:

Cuba Marine Research and Conservation - The primary focus of this project is to conduct a comprehensive coastal assessment of marine habitats in Cuba's territorial waters.  This will be used to catalog, synthesize and map data collected to describe the principal habitats (marine and estuarine areas, mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, etc.) and species of special concern particularly sea turtles and sharks.  Once this is done, the project will be able to provide information to inform the management and conservation of the region's ecosystems and biodiversity, including creation of protected areas, fisheries management, petroleum development, water quality, etc., to appropriate Cuban agencies - donate now!

Laguna San Ignacio Ecosystem Science Program - Working to develop and implement a multi-year, sustained ecosystem science program that will continue to provide wildlife and land managers and developers with information on the status and trends of the Laguna San Ignacio Wetlands Complex - donate now!

Surfers Without Borders
- A humanitarian aid project dedicated to creating projects that teach environmental awareness, reduce ocean pollution, promote sustainable development, and foster good relations between surfers and coastal communities around the world - donate now!

Lateral Line Fund - Established by Lateral Line Inc. to donate a portion of the company's proceeds in the name of marine conservation. This fund supports projects related to oceans, bays and tributaries, fisheries research, and related conservation projects/initiatives - donate now!

Ocean Conservation Research - This project promotes and supports marine biological and technological research based on conservation priorities.  OCR is initially focused on understanding the scope of, and exploring solutions to, the growing problem of human generated noise pollution and its impact on marine animals - donate now!

Aves Marinas - A program working with fisher communities in Baja California reduce bycatch and other harmful interactions with endangered Albatross populations in the Sea of Cortez - donate now!

earthOCEAN - The Ocean Foundation has partnered with this unique media production company to do documentary project on the plight of the highly endangered Vaquita porpoise in the Sea of Cortez.  earthOCEAN uses cutting-edge digital technologies to communicate science, environmental, wildlife, news and current affairs topics to the public in a way that inspires and informs - donate now!

Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative - Dedicated to spearheading local and regional efforts to investigate, promote conservation, and raise awareness of hawksbill sea turtles in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, one of the world's most endangered sea turtle populations. This program is the first ever field effort designed to specifically seek out and study hawksbills in this region of the world - donate now!

ProCaguama - A coalition of local fishermen, housewives, professionals, children and research concerned with the conservation of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle living in the waters off of Baja California Sur - donate now!

Sonar and Whales - The goal of this project is to propose, write, publish and promote a book focused on the environmental and cetacean species endangerment issues surrounding the military use of underwater sonar - donate now!

Striper Wars - Mark's Sugg's documentary account of Dick Russell's highly acclaimed book Striper Wars, which vividly describes the process that led to the successful comeback of the striped bass, a fish on the edge of extinction, and the new threats this species faces today - donate now!

Blue Climate Solutions - A program dedicated to advancing policy that promotes the roles coastal and ocean ecosystems play as natural carbon sinks, including the conservation of ecosystems such as seagrass meadows, mangrove swamps, and salt marshes.  We also seek to promote marine science that further explores the role natural ocean ecosystems play in mitigating the effect of climate change - donate now!

1Planet1Ocean - A project of TOF's resident Ocean Doctor, Dr. David E. Guggenheim, 1planet1ocean is a project created to explore, restore and sustain the oceans through strong international partnerships, offering solutions to the problems our oceans face.  The Ocean Doctor's current initiative is his 50 Years - 50 States - 50 Speeches expedition - donate now!

Blue Legacy International - a global campaign that recognizes that the beauty, power, and life-sustaining essence of our water planet is in danger. It also recognizes that we, as individuals and communities, have the power to protect and heal our most valuable resource.  Inspired and led by famed environmental spokeswoman Alexandra Cousteau, Blue Legacy International will leverage traditional and emerging media platforms to reach the broadest audience possible, across cultures and geographic regions - donate now!

Deep Surface - Through a new multimedia artistic perspective, this concert/performance seeks to remind the audience about the Sea's importance to humanity, the essential role it plays in our planet's existence, and the necessity of its preservation - donate now!

"Slime, Sex, and Drugs in the Sea: And Why You Should Care" - A book project by Dr. Ellen Prager.  This book will examine some of the ocean’s strangest creatures, explore the role each plays in the ocean ecosystem, and examine how the great diversity of life in the sea supports the planet, human life, and society.  This Project will include production of the book, as well as a promotional campaign to include media, public and educational presentations.

The Ocean Project - An international network of aquariums, zoos, museums, and conservation organizations working to create an understanding among their visitors and members of the significance of the ocean and the role each person plays in conserving our blue planet for the future. TOP's two most significant endeavors are their sponsorship of World Ocean Day and their ongoing Seas The Day initiative - donate now!

Ocean Connectors - Home to one of the busiest border crossings in the world, San Diego serves as an international hub in an ever globalizing world.  The development of locally focused values together with a sense of global awareness is crucial to creating a conservation ethic in today’s youth.  Ocean Connectors crosses borders and cultural boundaries to create links and a shared sense of stewardship between students in San Diego and Mexico - donate now!

Ocean Revolution - An international program designed to connect, inspire, and empower a new wave of young leaders to find creative solutions to protect the world's oceans. High school students from all over travel to meet marine experts, participate in hands-on field experiences, and return to their home school to establish ocean awareness programs. Ocean Revolution goes beyond and supplements formal education to provide the guidance, networking and mentoring for those who wish to delve deeper and learn from like-minded individuals - donate now!

SEEtheWild - This program connects travelers with wildlife conservation sites that directly benefit from the visit and provide an authentic wildlife-viewing experience.  SEEtheWild does this by partnering with leading tour operators to offer unforgettable experiences that directly benefit animals and the organizations protecting them.  Originally SEE Turtles, we have recently expanded our program to include other wildlife adventure travel as well - donate now!

"The Vertebrates Conceit" - A book project by Wendy Williams.  This book discusses the scientific speculation that cephalopods – creatures that separated from humans on the evolutionary time line more than a billion years ago – may share with us some high-level traits of intelligence. This type of intelligence has traditionally been associated only with vertebrate species, but new science is showing otherwise.  A second theme of the book is a plea for the protection of the oceans, since we have little idea of ocean ecology and know next to nothing about the life that survives deeper than roughly 100 feet below the ocean’s surface.

Marine Ecosystem Services Partnership - A growing body of literature on the economic value of marine ecosystems has developed, yet these data and literature are not easily available to policy makers and marine managers.  We propose to develop and maintain a “virtual center” to make our expanding library of economic valuations of marine ecosystems, especially coral reef values, available to policy makers, environmental managers, and stakeholders involved in the use and management of marine ecosystems - donate now!
