Fiscal Sponsorships

We can help reduce the complexity of operating a successful project and enable small groups and individuals to concentrate on programs and goals instead of administration.  TOF projects acquire the organizational infrastructure of a major NGO that frees individuals to conduct work in an effective and results-oriented way.  Our staff members provide financial, administrative, legal and and project counseling support so that project leaders can focus on program, planning, fundraising, and outreach.  A TOF project can be a temporary step before creating an independent organization.  The Ocean Foundation can provide:

- Fiscal Sponsorship - the legal infrastructure of a 501(c)(3) entity, with appropriate legal incorporation, IRS exemption, and charitable registration.

- Financial Services - oversight of all revenues and expenditures, monthly financial reports, budgetary tracking, payment of all invoices, audit and governmental reporting, all tax returns, and training in budget preparation and financial management.

- Other Support - an array of administrative services, from liability insurance to grant and contract management, designed to serve your needs.

TOF maintains full discretion and control over all funds that it raises; our Fiscal Sponsorship Funds are not separate entities. Fees for these services are a flat 10% of a project budget. If you are interested in bringing your project to The Ocean Foundation as a fiscally sponsored project, please contact TOF President Mark J. Spalding for more information and to begin the process.

Our current portfolio of fiscal sponsorships:

1Planet1Ocean - A project of TOF's resident Ocean Doctor, Dr. David E. Guggenheim, 1planet1ocean is a project created to explore, restore and sustain the oceans through strong international partnerships, offering solutions to the problems our oceans face. The Ocean Doctor's current initiative is his 50 Years - 50 States - 50 Speeches expedition - donate now!

Atlantic Salmon - Lost at Sea Lost at Sea will be a film that takes the viewer on an epic journey through the oceanic kingdom of the Atlantic salmon – king of fish – in an attempt to unravel the mystery of their life at sea.  Populations of salmon are plummeting to critical levels, even going extinct in some southern rivers.  The cause is mortality at sea.  For the very first time, using the latest DNA technology, scientists are able to track the salmon from the rivers, through the estuaries and into the vast North Atlantic and back again in hopes of finding an answer before it is too late. This film tells the most complete story of the life of Atlantic salmon – something not possible before - donate now!

Aves Marinas - A program working with fisher communities in Baja California to improve the relationship between fisheries and seabirds - donate now!

Blue Climate Solutions - A program dedicated to advancing policy that promotes the roles coastal and ocean ecosystems play as natural carbon sinks, including the conservation of ecosystems such as seagrass meadow mangrove swamps, and salt marshes. We also seek to promote marine science that further explores the role natural ocean ecosystems play in mitigating the effect of climate change - donate now!

Blue Cloud Spatial - Blue Cloud provides solutions for ecosystem protection and restoration using remote sensing and spatial analysis. We partner with conservation organizations to map and analyze the natural environment with three principal objectives: Empower more informed and effective decision-making by framing environmental issues within a spatial context. Communicate the scale and scope of restoration efforts and environmental threats to the public, funders and local stakeholders through a more compelling medium. Establish detailed photographic baselines as historical records from which to measure change over time, plan/evaluate restoration efforts and document environmental degradation. - donate now!

Blue Legacy International - A global campaign that recognizes that the beauty, power, and life-sustaining essence of our water planet is in danger. It also recognizes that we, as individuals and communities, have the power to protect and heal our most valuable resource.  Inspired and led by famed environmental spokeswoman Alexandra Cousteau, Blue Legacy International will leverage traditional and emerging media platforms to reach the broadest audience possible, across cultures and geographic regions - donate now!

Cuba Marine Research and Conservation - The primary focus of this project is to conduct a comprehensive coastal assessment of marine habitats in Cuba's territorial waters.  This will be used to catalog, synthesize and map data collected to describe the principal habitats (marine and estuarine areas, mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, etc.) and species of special concern particularly sea turtles and sharks.  Once this is done, the project will be able to provide information to inform the management and conservation of the region's ecosystems and biodiversity, including creation of protected areas, fisheries management, petroleum development, water quality, etc., to appropriate Cuban agencies - donate now!

Deep Ecology Resources - Deep Ecology Resources is an environmental group dedicated to improving ocean health and climate change mitigation. Our vision is a world where environmental protection and conservation are economically self-sustaining. Your support is needed to create a world where environmental protection is profitable; a true rescue for the global environment. Additionally, the market-based incentives for the environment we are working to establish will help allow finite charitable finances to be best utilized. donate now!

"The Eye of the Whale" - A public education and outreach project relating to Douglas Abrams's book, "Eye of the Whale," which was published in August 2009.  The book is fact-based fiction and was written to educate people who might not otherwise be informed about the dangers of chemical toxins in our environment, especially the oceans. The project involves an educational and outreach campaign about the health of our oceans and the health of all species, including humans.  This book is being used as an outreach tool by organizations to further their marine and ocean education efforts - donate now!

Guanaja Mangrove Restoration - Our mission is to restore the damage done to mangrove forests on Isla de Guanaja by Hurricane Mitch and human activities. This involves on-the-ground planting as well as monitoring and education to ensure the long-term success of the systems. We are currently seeking to establish a permanent home base on the island that will serve as an education center and research station. - donate now!

This program is the first ever field effort designed to specifically seek out and study hawksbills in this region of the world - donate now!

Institute for Ocean Literacy This program is dedicated to producing quality, curriculum-based, education resources for teachers, students and their families. The interactive, interdisciplinary, cultural arts programs help students of all ages understand that the Ocean, the most dominant feature on Earth, is essential to sustaining our planet. IOL helps prepare students to be scientists, leaders, managers and teachers through diverse, inquiry-based educational activities. - donate now!

"Kraken: The Curious, Exciting and Slightly Disturbing Science of Squid."
- A book project by Wendy Williams.  This book discusses the scientific speculation that cephalopods – creatures that separated from humans on the evolutionary time line more than a billion years ago – may share with us some high-level traits of intelligence. This type of intelligence has traditionally been associated only with vertebrate species, but new science is showing otherwise. A second theme of the book is a plea for the protection of the oceans, since we have little idea of ocean ecology and know next to nothing about the life that survives deeper than roughly 100 feet below the ocean’s surface. The book is expected to be released by Harry Abrams Inc. in March, 2011 donate now!

Last Ocean Last Ocean is an organization advancing ocean issue awareness and promoting the creation of a global network of marine protected areas.
