Protecting Species of Concern

For many of us, our first interest in the oceans began with a interest in the large animals that call it home.  Whether it be the awe inspired by a gentle humpback whale, the undeniable charisma of a curious dolphin, or the ferocious gaping maw of a great white shark, these animals are more than just the ambassadors of the sea.  These apex predators and keystone species keep the ocean ecosystem in balance, and the health of their populations often serves as an indicator for the health of the oceans as a whole.  Below are the funds and projects hosted at The Ocean Foundation that are dedicated to protecting these species of concern.

Marine Mammal Fund - This is a grantmaking fund dedicated to the conservation and protection of marine mammals.  The Marine Mammal Fund is a pooled fund that is specifically designed for donors of all sizes who have an interest in these special animals - donate now!

Sea Turtle Fund - This is a grantmaking fund dedicated to the conservation and protection of sea turtles.  The Sea Turtle Fund is a pooled fund that is specifically designed for donors of all sizes who have an interest in these special animals - donate now!

Tag-A-Giant Fund - This fund supports research on large open ocean (pelagic) fish, especially tunas, billfishes, and sharks. This fund provides support for projects that use remote telemetry devices, such as pop-up satellite archival tags. The information gained from these tags improves understanding of these species; their migratory patterns and habitat needs, and inform the management decisions that are intended to ensure their sustainability - donate now!

Ocean Conservation Research - This project is focused on understanding the scope of, and exploring solutions to the growing problem of human generated noise pollution and its impact on marine animals. Its work promotes and executes marine biological and technological research based on conservation priorities - using the products of this research to inform the policies and practice of the public, industry and lawmakers so that we may all become better stewards of the sea - donate now!

Aves Marinas - A program working with fisher communities in Baja California reduce bycatch and other harmful interactions with endangered Albatross populations in the Sea of Cortez - donate now!

earthOCEAN - The Ocean Foundation has partnered with this unique media production company to do documentary project on the plight of the highly endangered Vaquita porpoise in the Sea of Cortez.  earthOCEAN uses cutting-edge digital technologies to communicate science, environmental, wildlife, news and current affairs topics to the public in a way that inspires and informs - donate now!

Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative - Dedicated to spearheading local and regional efforts to investigate, promote conservation, and raise awareness of hawksbill sea turtles in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, one of the world's most endangered sea turtle populations. This program is the first ever field effort designed to specifically seek out and study hawksbills in this region of the world - donate now!

ProCaguama - A coalition of local fishermen, housewives, professionals, children and research concerned with the conservation of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle living in the waters off of Baja California Sur - donate now!

Striper Wars - Mark's Sugg's documentary account of Dick Russell's highly acclaimed book Striper Wars, which vividly describes the process that led to the successful comeback of the striped bass, a fish on the edge of extinction, and the new threats this species faces today - donate now!

Pacific Life Marine Mammal Research Fund (a Donor Advised Fund)

Boyd Lyon Sea Turtle Fund - Dedicated to the memory of Boyd Lyon, this Committee Advised Fund provides an annual scholarship to a marine biology student whose research is focused on sea turtles - donate now!

The following "Friends of" funds are each dedicated to specific species or sub-species of concern defended by a foreign nonprofit that has partnered with The Ocean Foundation. Each fund has been set up by The Ocean Foundation to receive gifts and from which we make grants for charitable purposes to the selected foreign nonprofits that advance the mission and exempt purposes of The Ocean Foundation.
